Michel, who also serves as director of the , is a literary scholar whose research focuses on aesthetic theory, literature, and philosophy. He has a particular interest in ways of speaking about intensive encounters with art.
Johannes Türk, chair of the Department of Germanic Studies, said in a recent message to Michel’s colleagues, “The academy plays a central role in Germany and in the world…[Michel] is the third of only three members from the United States in what is arguably the most prestigious academy devoted to literature and language in German-speaking Europe.”
